How it works

For a long exit, subtract the trail from the highest price since activation. For a short exit, add it to the lowest price. Update the extreme yourself; triggering an order does not guarantee its fill price.

How the Trailing Stop Loss Calculator works

This trailing stop loss calculator finds a trigger from a favorable price extreme after a trail has activated. For an exit from a long, enter the highest price reached; for an exit from a short, enter the lowest. Choose a percentage trail or a fixed distance in price units.

Calculate a percentage or fixed-distance trail

For a long exit, trigger = high × (1 − percentage ÷ 100), or high − fixed distance. For a short exit, trigger = low × (1 + percentage ÷ 100), or low + fixed distance. The percentage is measured from that high or low, rather than your entry.

For example, a long with a high of 120 and a 5% trail triggers at 114: the price distance is 6. A fixed distance of 5 instead gives 115. For a short whose low is 80, a 5% trail gives 84; a fixed distance of 5 gives 85.

Enter the extreme after activation

Use the highest price since activation for a long sell exit, or the lowest price for a short buy exit. Update this input when a new favorable extreme forms. With a fixed distance, a high rising from 120 to 130 moves a long trigger from 115 to 125; a pullback leaves the recorded high unchanged.

This is a snapshot of an already active trail. Your venue manages activation conditions, price tracking and order submission. A reached trigger may submit a market or limit order; the resulting fill depends on that order and available liquidity. Fees, slippage, tick-size rounding and liquidation are outside this price calculation. Use stop-loss planning for an exit from a cash risk budget or ATR stop-loss for an entry-based volatility distance.

FAQ

Is the extreme the current price or entry price?

Use the favorable extreme reached since the trail became active: highest for a long exit and lowest for a short exit. It can differ from both entry and the latest price.

Will the calculator trail the market automatically?

Update the extreme manually to calculate another snapshot. Price monitoring and activation belong to the order system where you place the trade.

Does a trailing stop guarantee a profit?

A trigger describes an order condition. Actual PnL also depends on entry, size, execution, fees and funding. Calculate a proposed filled exit with the PnL calculator.

What distances can I enter?

Use a positive fixed price distance or a percentage above 0 and below 100. A long trigger must remain above zero; all calculated values must be finite and distinct from the supplied extreme.
